Demasiado Corazón (Colón: 1998)

This soundtrack for a Mexican soap opera, finally released in the US in late 2000, is Colón's best record in ten years. Colón also acted in the show, and apparently it got him fired up again - he even wrote a few songs and played trombone. The self-penned "Low Rider" puts a killer syncopated piano line and snarling horns against 4/4 drums for one of his most powerful tracks since the early 70's. The title track, which Colón wrote with keyboardist Ennio Gatti, is a mournful social comment recalling the late 70's Colón/Blades glory days (and even uses the police sirens last heard in "Pedro Navaja"). However, his third composition, "Mi Cumbia Bomba," comes off like a calculated attempt to create a hit, with a stale synth groove and excessive nationality-dropping. After "Low Rider," the fifty-five-second "Intermission" may be the purest fun on the record, a playful instrumental with intertwining trombones. Even the less intriguing numbers ("Despertares" by frequent contributor Amilcar Boscan) are fast-paced and clever. When Colón's giving maximum effort he explores material from outside his coterie of writers, and here he piles trombones onto Joan Manuel Serrat's "Toca Madera," get romantic on Spanish heartthrob Eros Ramazzotti's "Yo Sin Tí," and revisits Veloso's "Miel" (more swinging than the sedate 1980 version) - there's also a remake of "Cayo Condón." Demasiado Corazón

Willie Colón- Que si era difícil conseguirlo, que ni tan siquiera lo habían visto u oído, que se sabía muy poco de la grabación... Pues ya no hay excusas. "Demasiado Corazón", la superproducción del astro Willie Colón, lo consigue fácilmente en la Isla del Encanto. Los temas son un verdadero reto para el bailador y una cátedra para los salseros. Lo que escuchará es salsa caliente, variada, con interesantes fusiones y sin embelecos. Si tiene algún vecino que le rinde culto al "dios de hojalata" (entiéndase el carro), sugiera que escuche "Low Rider", los que recuerdan con nostalgia la época gorda de Colón y Lavoe quedarán enamorados de "Intermission"y si de temas románticos se trata entonces seleccione "Yo sin ti" (de Eros Ramazzotti, "Blanca Luna", "Demasiado Corazón" y "Despertares". Sienta como los pies se revelan a oir "Mi cumbia Bomba", mas reserve energía para "Miel", un sensual tema carioca muy seductor. La voz de Colón se ajusta perfectamente a las exigencias de las canciones. Los sabrosos ritmos poseen un condimento balanceado, tan contagioso que resulta imposible mantenerse inmóvil. El magistral trombón de Colón está insuperable y los arreglos hablan por sí solos. "Demasiado Corazón" es una de las mejores producciones de este género que encontrará en el mercado. La conciencia social continúa viva en el arte de Willie Colón y su visión musical refleja la misma entrega que siempre lo ha caracterizado.

For the title of his record, el malo del Bronx, Willie Colón used the battle cry that the late great Héctor LaVoe proclaimed in that standard Barrunto: "Y Vuelve Otra Vez." (One More Time!)

Willie challenges us again with aggressive, melodic salsa, with everyday themes, humanistic, latino- americano, but with musical variety. This is confirmed by cuts like Me Pegue en la lotería, Cayo Condón, Candidato de la ingenuidad, Parada 22, that anxiously wait to be listened to.

We must remember that the first song that Colón recorded as a singer was the torch song Guaracha, from the Good Bad Ugly album in 1975, where Rubén Blades debuted at his side. Musically, he debuted in a symphonic format on the Solo album, where the instrumental Chinacubana appeared, he sang Juancito, Sin poderte and revived the bolero Mentiras tuyas. He went on to the modern charanga sound (i.e. Tiempo pa' matar, Fantasmas and Criollo albums) and later on to other electronic inclinations (Especial No 5 y Top Secrets, that brought us Simón, El gran varón).

As of late, he has returned to an acoustic approach, using his trademark as a base: the trombone.

But before he decided to sing as a soloist, el Malo del Bronx was already considered one of the best background singers in salsa and perhaps also the best second voice. Those who have heard him on Buscando Guayaba and Te Están Buscando with Rubén Blades, easily come to this conclusion.

In 1993, his production Hecho en Puerto Rico (that includes the heart rendering son montuno Cueste lo que cueste and the la very successful Idilio) was nominated for the Grammy.

Actually its merits more than justified winning the Academy of Recording Arts & Science's coveted award. But in the end, the name Gloria Estefan carried more weight with the American public.

Y vuelve otra vez, contains the song No me fío (Huellas del pasado), where Ángel "Cucco" Peña accompanies him (the same second voice from Idilio). Furthermore, loyal to his roots he incursions into typical Puerto Rican music on Borinquen Parada 22, where he features Pedro Guzmán on the cuatro guitar.

The invited guests are bassist Bobby Valentín (of the Fania Allstars) and on the coros a formidable crew of distinguished talent: Darvel García of Conjunto Canayón, Chegui Ramos of Batacumbele, the young singer Wichie Camacho and the extraordinary sonero Tito Allen, known for his hit Feliz y dichoso.

Producer, composer, trombonist and arranger, Willie Colón is still a force to reckon with 30 year since his appearance on the salsa scene. As a sonero of nasal, baritoned voice, he's had the luxury of many hits : Corazón guerrero (based on Dire Straights, Mark Knopfler's Sultans of Swing), Oh que sera, Gitana and Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblón. It's about a unique, inimitable voice. Y vuelve otra vez is a "must have", as a vaccination against the apathetic salsa (flacid and wanting of musical value) that governs our airwaves, but not our hearts. !Guapea Willie Colón!

Para titular de su nuevo disco, el malo del Bronx Willie Colón ha usado el grito de batalla que el gran Héctor LaVoe proclamaba en el tema Barrunto: "Y Vuelve Otra Vez."

Willie porfía con la salsa agresiva y melódica, de contenidos cotidianos, humanos, latinoamericanos, pero de variedad musical. Así lo confirman los temas Me Pegue en la lotería, Cayo Condón, Candidato de la ingenuidad, Parada 22, que aguadan ansiosos ser difundidos.

Cabe recordar que el primer tema que grabo Colón como; sonero fue el despechado Guaracha, del disco El bueno, el malo, el feo de 1975, donde debutó Rubén Blades a su lado. En lo musical, debutó con el formato de filarmónica en Solo, donde vino el instrumental Chinacubana, canto Juancito, Sin poderte hablar y reactualizo el bolero Mentiras tuyas. Paso al sonido de charanga moderna (por ejemplo los discos Tiempo pa' matar, Fantasmas y Criollo) y luego a otro de inclinaciones electrónicas (Especial No 5 y Top Secrets, que trajo Simón, El gran varón). En los últimos tiempos, ha vuelto a la sonoridad acústica, teniendo como base al instrumento que lo identifica: el trombón.

Pero antes de animarse cantar solo, el Malo del Bronx ya estaba considerado como uno de los mejores coristas de salsa y acaso la mejor segunda voz. Quien haya escuchado Buscando Guayaba y Te Están Buscando con Rubén Blades, fácil llegaría esta conclusión.

En el 93, su producción Hecho en Puerto Rico (que trajo el hiriente son montuno Cueste lo que cueste y la exitosa y reactualizada salsa en Idilio) estuvo nominada al Grammy. De hecho le sobraban méritos para obtener el galardón de la Academia de las Ciencias de las Artes de la Grabación de Estados Unidos. pero al final pesó mas el nombre de 'Gloria Estefan para el publico gringo.

Y vuelve otra vez, trae el tema No me fío (Huellas del pasado), donde aparece Ángel "Cucco" Peña (el mismo de la segunda voz en Idilio). Ademas, fiel a sus raíces incursiona en la música típica de Puerto Rico en el tema Borinquen Parada 22, donde figura la guitarra-cuatro de Pedro Guzmán.

Entre los invitados está el bajista Bobby Valentín (de, las Estrellas d Fania) y en los coros un plantel destacado: Darvel García del Conjunto Canayón, Chegui Ramos de Batacumbele, el joven cantante Wichie Camacho y el extraordinario sonero Tito Allen, aquel que cantaba Feliz y dichoso.

Productor, compositor, trombonista y arreglista, Willie Colón sigue vigente a 30 años de su aparición en la salsa. Como sonero de voz nasal y grave, se ha dado el lujo de pegar varios éxitos: Corazón guerrero (basado en la melodía de Mark Knopfler de Dire Straits), Oh que sera, Gitana y Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblón. Se trata de una voz inimitable, única.

Y vuelve otra vez es una producción de audiencia indispensable, como una vacuna contra la salsa apática. monga y de escasos méritos musicales que gobierna las radioemisoras, pero no nuestros corazones. !Guapea Willie Colón!

Let's get one thing straight. VIGILANTE is not the type of movie that will satisfy those who dislike violent genre films.It is, however, the kind of picture that will thrill any fan of DEATH WISH, ROLLING THUNDER, THE EXTERMINATOR or any other '70s / early '80s revenge flick that has vigilantism as its main theme.
The acting in VIGILANTE is of a high quality, superb even for an exploitation film. In particular, Robert Forster shines as an everyday working Joe driven to the brink by grief and circumstance. Fred Williamson was never better (and is unlikely to be), while Joe Spinnell steals your attention in his two scenes.

¡Hay que aclarar algo! VIGILANTE no es una pelicula que va a satisfacer a aquellos que no le gusta este genero.
Sin embargo, sí es la clase de pelicula que fanaticos de DEATH WISH, ROLLING THUNDER, THE EXTERMINATOR o cualquier pelicula con tema de venganza de los '70s / '80s.

Las actuaciones en VIGILANTE son de alta calidad, excelente aun siendo una pelicula de explotación. En particular, Robert Forster brilla como un hombre trabajador forzado por la angustia y sus circumstabcias.

Singer-turned-boxer Andy 'Kid' Clave (Ruben Blades) signs a contract with a shady promoter Joaquin Vargas (Willie Colón). But Clave turns against Vargas when the promoter's thugs kill Clave's girlfriend when he thinks about backing out of the contract. While seeking a way to get revenge against Vargas, Clave learns that he has a blood clot in his head. But nothing will deter him from getting his revenge and making a shot at the title.

Inspired by an actual incident, this unassuming, wonderfully good-natured romantic comedy tells the story of a New York City street cop named Charlie (Nicolas Cage) who makes a promise to a coffee-shop waitress named Yvonne (Bridget Fonda) that will change both their lives. One day after coffee, Charlie is embarrassed to discover he doesn't have money for a tip, so he tells Yvonne that he'll share half of his winnings if the lottery ticket he's holding comes up a winner. Sure enough, he wins the jackpot--a whopping $4 million payoff--and Charlie's wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez), goes ballistic when he tells her about his deal with Yvonne. From this point, It Could Happen to You follows Charlie's dilemma as he is forced to decide the proper course of action, and director Andrew Bergman smoothly incorporates a gentle love story into this amusing crisis of conscience. Fonda and Cage have an easygoing chemistry that adds a pleasant touch to the movie's fairy-tale plot, and the story's kindhearted sentiment is never so thick that it becomes sticky-sweet or artificial. As feel-good comedies go, this one's a class act. --Jeff Shannon
